What is your job and where do you live and work?
I own a coffee roasting company called Mirror Coffee Roasters with my brother Sergei here in Bellingham, WA. I also own a creative agency where I help brands create video content and distribute it across social media platforms.
What does coffee mean to you and what do you love about it?
Coffee to me is a craft and a point of connection. From the producer to the final cup, there’s so much nuance, craftsmanship, and connection throughout the whole process. It’s relational. It builds a bridge between people. I love that coffee is both a craft always get better at and a touch point with people around the world.
What is your experience with Comandante grinders and what do you like about them?
My brother was the first person to tell me about Comandante grinders, and I was intrigued by the thought of a really great hand grinder. I bought him a C40 MK4 a few years ago and he loved it. I finally picked up a Trailmaster at SCA 2023 since I enjoy travelling and brewing outdoors. I love the flavor profile and grind quality of the Comandante grinders. It’s exceptional. Since getting my grinder, I’ve been using it almost daily and love it. My filter coffee tastes phenomenal!
Why did you apply for the Comandante Grind & Brew Cup?
I actually had no idea this was a thing until my brother mentioned it to me who also competed in the same competition. I don’t have much experience pouring latte art so I thought this might be a fun competition for me to compete in that I have a little more experience with.
How was the competition for you?
The competition was so much fun. I enjoyed the atmosphere, excitement, and overall experience. This has inspired me to compete more!
What are your future goals?
I’m focused on growing our roasting operation here at Mirror with my brother as well as scaling my creative agency. I’m also considering competing at the US coffee championships, but that’s still up for debate.
What is your advice for future competitors?
Show up to have fun and don’t stress about getting everything perfect. You should practice beforehand, nail down a routine you’re comfortable with, do your best, and have fun!
