What is your job and where do you live and work?
I live in Quezon City, Philippines. I am currently a pre-medicine BS Biology graduate and planning to start my medicine proper next year.
What does coffee mean to you and what do you love about it?
Coffee is my staple drink next to water (or the other way around lol). For me, it is more than just a beverage itself. What I love about it is the sensory experience and the connection it gives, which creates a new experience and enjoyment in a cup.
What is your experience with Comandante grinders and what do you like about them?
I’ve been using a Comandante C40 MK4 Liquid Amber for a year already. What I like about it is the universality of clicks shared among other fellow Comandante users. This feature allows me to replicate or brew with the same parameters that others use for a certain cup of coffee. Another aspect that I appreciate is its robust quality, as it is built to last, providing me with confidence and reliability.
Why did you apply for the Comandante Grind and Brew Cup?
The thought of considering it as a training ground, a never-ending improvement. I won’t be able to validate my knowledge of coffee brewing just by brewing at home. I need proper judgement or insights from other enthusiasts and professionals. Another reason why I applied is because of my support system (shoutout to my family and especially my girlfriend who are always there for me).
How was the competition for you?
It was really fun! Even though I was a bit nervous, the moment when most or all of the judges chose my competing cup brought relief and made me proud of myself. It indicates that I brewed that cup really well.
What are your future goals?
My future goals include winning more coffee competitions, attending more coffee events and workshops, sharing and spreading awareness about specialty coffee, and eventually opening a cafe soon.
What is your advice for future competitors?
Don't aim for perfection; aim first for mindful progress, which will eventually lead to perfection. Always explore and try different brewers and parameters. Lastly, it may be a cliche, but truly just enjoy brewing and competing!
